Macaw Facts:

  • The macaw is considered of the most intelligent birds.
  • Macaws can live to be 60 and some in the wild–80!
  • They are the largest of the bird family.
  • They are playful birds and like to explore new things with their beaks and feet.
  • If raised as a pet macaws need A LOT of attention or they get bord easily. They can become attached to their person.
  • Macaws like to socialize and can gather in flocks of 30-100 birds.
  • The smallest macaw is the mini macaw which can be about 12 inches from head to tail.
  • The largest macaw is the hyacinth which can be 3.5 feet (1m)!
  • Macaws can be seen eating from clay licks. They will do this becasue they need the sodium in their diet.
  • Predators to macaws include snakes, jaguars/large cats, monkeys, and larger birds.

Hyacinth macaws are the largest of the macaws reach 3.5 feet from head to tail. They have bright cobalt blue feathers and It's beak is so tough that it can open a coconut! But they are known to be a 'gentle giant' of the macaws.
