Echidna Facts:

  • They look a lot like anteaters and other spiny mammals such as hedgehogs and porcupines.
  • They will tear apart soft logs, anthills and use its long, sticky tongue, to collect prey.
  • An Echidna tongue can reach 18 cm long – and it can flick it out to catch ants a 100 times a minute!
  • They can eat about 40,000 individual ants / termites a day.
  • They are equipped with electrosensors (That’s the ability to sense natural electrical stimuli-which helps them locate food like ants).
  • Echidnas and the platypus are the only egg-laying mammals, known as monotremes.
  • The Echidna will lay one egg.
  • The have pouches like kangaroos!
  • They are timid animals when they feel threatened they will ball themselves up or bury themselves.
  • Their claws are are curved backwards to help them dig.
